Gary and Becky Steiner
Medina, OH
Questions answered by Becky

Where was this picture taken?
Lake Placid Pub & Brewery

What event were you there for?
Lake Placid Ironman 2008

Who were you there to support?
My Brother and Sister-in-law, Jim and Helen Shafer, it was their 20th Anniversary Gift to each other!

Where are they from?
Vero Beach, Florida
They had 4 other friends there from Vero participating in the event.

How long did it take you to get there?
The drive from Medina is a straight easy shot! With stops, 10 hours. We've made this trip many times.

Where did you stay while you were there?
We backpacked into the Marcy Dam area of the High Peaks region. We camped out and did Mt. Colden (4714 ft) while we were there. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, I suggest you go for Mt. Marcy, and Algonquin as day hikes... it is well worth the effort.

Where is your favorite place to eat there?
I have to say that the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery is one of my favorite places. Their home brew is the best around! I recommend the UBU ale! Food is good too!

Did you do any shopping while you were there?
I shopped at the local shops along the downtown strip. I especially like the book shop! Talk about some great books for collecting! I always visit EMS too, looking for some deals on outdoor gear. You can rent your bear canisters there too. They are required in the back country! Yes, those black bruins can be pests!

Anything you think people should know to plan for this event?
The IM is a very long day. This year was rough due to weather, hence the UBU ale made the day pass easily. I liked being at the final 5K mark of the run to cheer on the awesome athletes! I handed out sticks of gum to those final athletes and lifted them up for the final push! We all had tears!

Plan way ahead...it gets very busy. We arrived on Thursday and it was already chaos! It is a very friendly walking town, so bring those comfy shoes!

You won't regret going, it is beautiful! There is a tremendous amount of history in Lake Placid. Check it out before you go and talk to the locals! There is a breakfast place (diner) along Main street (the name escapes me), it is cash only...talk about lumber jack portions! You could go all day!
